His only weapon was the Word of God and prayer.

Desmond Doss was an evangelical Christian who desired not to be like his alcoholic father which strengthened Desmond in keeping the commandments of Christ. The commandment “Do not kill” had a lasting impact on the boy from his childhood. His father bought a large picture at auction when he was a child and the 10 commandments were written on the picture with illustrations describing the meaning of each one of them. The words "Do not kill" had an illustration of the picture of the dead body of Abel. During his service in the army, Desmond regularly attended the church and read the Bible every day. His only weapon was the Word of God and prayer.
