Washington read the oath from the balcony of the Federal Hall in New York. The last words he said during the inauguration are, "God help me." Then he kissed the Bible and, accompanied by the crowd, went to serve in the Protestant church of St. Paul.
The US Congress set Washington a salary of 25 thousand dollars a year, but the president refused it. Nevertheless, over time, he was persuaded to accept this money.President Washington did not like the slave system, but did not know how to defeat him. In his will, he wrote that after death the wife would release all his slaves.
In the last years of his life, Washington spent in Mount Vernon, in his beloved house, in the circle of friends, where he died in 1799.
